In India, the Campaign’s work focuses on MDGs 1-7 through developing partnerships and strengthening capacities with six key constituencies to achieve the goals by 2015: civil society organizations, parliamentarians, local authorities, youth, media and the private sector. This work is concentrated in the priority States of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

The Campaign sees the issue of exclusion as critical to measuring the MDG status of women, especially scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, nomadic, de-notified tribes and Muslim minorities. The Campaign supports alternate reporting for each of these sections and continues to provide specific support to highlight issues facing them.

The Campaign has supported many innovative citizens and civil society initiatives that have built up sustained pressure on the government to deliver on their promises.

A partnership with the non-state coalition Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (Do Not Break Your Promise Campaign), of over 3,000 civil society groups across India, resulted in the published Citizen’s Report on the MDGs (2007) measuring India’s progress on achieving the MDGs from the view of civil society.

The Campaign also supported the development of strategic campaigning and advocacy initiatives such as the “Nine is Mine” campaign (demanding 9% GDP for public expenditure on Health and Education), and the Civil Society Report Card on the National Common Minimum Programme.

The Campaign seeks to strengthen synergy between the advocacy efforts of the United Nations organizations working in India on key development issues through the United Nations Development Assistance Framework.
