National meeting reviews MDG progress in Bangladesh
At a national meeting at Dhaka, organized by leading Bangladesh civil society network SUPRO and the Campaign for Good Governance, speakers demanded country specific targets be set to achieve the MDGs.
Dhaka: Leading civil society network SUPRO and the Campaign for Good Governance organized a National Sharing Meeting on MDGs Progress Review on December 9, 2009 at the Press Club, Dhaka. A Shadow Report was also presented at the occasion.
Speakers placed a strong emphasize on the need to address local problems in line with country specific targets for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. A sustainable work plan must be devised taking into consideration the poverty issues in the country caused largely by climate change, unemployment, market liberalization, and commercialization of essential services to eradicate poverty and ensure essential services for all citizens.
Guest speakers and experts at the meeting included Professor M S Akbar, MP & Chairman of Bangladesh Parliamentarian Standing Committee; Abdul Mannan, former State Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation; Mohammad Tarique Ahsan, Assistant Professor, Institute of Education and Research, Dhaka University; Sanjida Akther Nira, Assistant Professor, Women & Gender Development Studies, Dhaka University; Monisha Biswas, National MDGs Advocacy and Communication Expert, UN Millennium Campaign, Bangladesh.
Among others present were M A Quader, Secretary General of SUPRO, Manju Rani Pramanik, Executive Board and National Council member of SUPRO, M A Salam, National Council member of SUPRO, civil society members, media professionals and district networking members of SUPRO.
The round table discussion was moderated by SUPRO’s Chairperson Abdul Awal and the discussion paper was jointly presented by Lawrence Besra and Qumrunnessa Nazly, coordinator of SUPRO.
